About the Breed
The Old English Sheepdog is a large, athletic dog breed with an unmistakable shaggy coat. The OES, as fans call the breed for short, was historically a drover, helping farmers drive cattle and sheep many miles to market and developed a special gait, the amble or pace, for efficient coverage of the miles. Today, this good natured dog enjoys the comfort of home life and still competes in conformation, obedience, agility and herding trials.
Smart but independent with a fun sense of humour, OES require a fair amount of exercise, plus early training and socialisation, which are both a must. This breed loves physical and mental exercise and does not enjoy being left alone for long periods of time and much prefers to be in the company of their family.
A properly bred OES is good natured and kind, and this is what makes them an excellent children's companion and a super family dog. OES are not known for being an assertive watchdog, but they may bark when strangers come to their home
The OES is an adapable, intelligent dog with an easygoing disposition. They are affectionate with all members of their families, their shaggy coats also don't tend to shed as much as you might think. If you are looking for a loyal, protective, and loving family companion, this may be the breed for you.
